At just 27 years old, Leavitt has become the youngest press secretary in modern US history, taking on the role in Donald Trump’s second administration. Her appointment marks the first time anyone under 30 has held the position since 1969, during Richard Nixon’s presidency.
From family business to politics: Leavitt’s early life
Leavitt was born on August 24, 1998 in New Hampshire, as per Iowa State University’s archives.
Hailing from a business-oriented family, she got an early start in her career by working at her family’s small business, an experience that paved her way into the political landscape.
Leavitt earned a degree in politics and communication from Saint Anselm College in 2019. During her studies, she volunteered at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics and gained firsthand experience in the media world by working at Fox News during the 2016 election.
In an interview with Politico, the press secretary revealed that she was also an athlete growing up.
“I was an athlete growing up, and I played softball in college,” she said.
First break during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign
After graduating, she joined Donald Trump’s team, serving as a presidential writer and assistant press secretary in the White House press office.
Leavi got her first big break during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, working as a student assistant at Fox News. Her skills quickly caught the attention of Washington insiders, which led her to a role as press secretary during Trump’s first term.
Leavitt later served as communications director for Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who is now set to become the US Ambassador to the United Nations.
‘Karoline is smart, tough’
On November 15, 2024, Donald Trump (R) announced his selection of Karoline Leavitt as White House press secretary for his second presidential term.
Praising her talent and skills, the US President said, “Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator. I have the utmost confidence she will excel at the podium, and help deliver our message to the American People as we, Make America Great Again.”
On January 20, 2025, Leavitt made her first public appearance as press secretary during Trump’s inaugural events in Washington, DC.
Shortly before the inauguration, she wrote: “Thank you to the hardworking White House staff for preparing for our arrival. See you soon!” Later, she shared a photo from the Capitol Rotunda, captioned, “The Golden Age of America has begun.”
Life beyond politics
Leavitt also shares glimpses of her personal life with her followers. According to Inquistir, she is married to Nick, a self-employed business owner, and the couple welcomed their son, Nicholas Robert, in July 2024.
