NEW DELHI: Actor-politician Vijay issued a strong statement on Friday over Centre’s one nation one election initiative, cautioning about Tamil Nadu’s historical ability to respond to challenges.
“PM sir, we understand your plans when you spoke about one nation, one election. Sir (PM Modi), handle Tamil Nadu carefully. Tamil Nadu is a state which has shown its power many times… I would say be careful sir,” he said.
Vijay made the statement during the first-ever general council meeting of his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, which completed its first anniversary on February 26. The programme was held Thiruvanmayur.
The TVK chief, also known as “Thalapathy” (leader) among his fans, targeted Centre on issues such as delimitation, simultaneous polls, National Education Policy (NEP), language policy and Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The issues, particularly delimitation, NEP and language policy have faced strong opposition in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu will hold assembly election in April-May 2026.
Central schemes opposed
During the meeting, TVK passed a total of 17 resolutions against central government schemes, including against the three-language policy, delimitation and Waqf Bill. The party also decided it would ask the Centre to withdraw the Waqf Bill.
The resolution on the language policy stated TVK will remain “dedicated” to the two-language policy and proposed a three-language policy under the NEP. The party also resolved it would never accept “imposition” of another language politically.
The resolution on the proposed delimitation called the exercise “not necessary.”
Additionally, Vijay’s party condemned the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government for not controlling drugs in the state, and for making “false promises” on Old Pension Scheme to government employees.
