Watch: Marriage feast fails but ‘baraati’ cops save the day for bride and groom in Surat

SURAT: Fireworks over a shortage of food almost turned a wedding into a forgettable night for the bride and groom. However, the determined woman turned around the tense situation by seeking the help of the cops and tied the knot at an unexpected location – the police station.

When police reunited Rahul and Anjali

Dramatic scenes unfolded at Laxminagar Vadi in the Varachha area on Sunday night. Everything was going smoothly with revellers dancing to DJ tunes and crackers bursting until the time came for dinner. The groom’s family noticed the food wasn’t enough and felt insulted as nearly 100 guests were in line to relish the wedding feast.
Tensions escalated, and heated arguments broke out between the two families. Things reached a flashpoint when the groom and his family stormed off, leaving the bride at the venue. The heartbroken bride was left with no choice but to take matters into her own hands. She dialled 100 and sought help from the police.
In an unexpected turn of events, Varachha police swung into action. A team of cops arrived at the groom’s house and brought him to the police station.
Inspector R B Gojiya said, “After the bride reached out, we immediately stepped in to offer support. Our team went to the groom’s house and requested him to return with us. We have a Santwana Kendra and Women’s Help Desk who initiated counselling.”
After being counselled not to call off the marriage, it dawned on the groom that a fight over food wasn’t something that should halt his new innings of life. However, he was adamant about not returning to the marriage venue.
Amid hectic counselling that continued that began at 2:30am, the cops were amused when the couple made an unusual request – to complete the wedding rituals inside the police station.
The police then donned the role of ‘baraatis,’ ensuring that the garlanding and bidaai rituals were carried out right at the station. Flowers and garlands were arranged, and with the cops acting as guests, the couple exchanged vows in an impromptu ceremony around 4:30am on Monday.
