AHMEDABAD: Union home minister Amit Shah celebrated Uttarayan on Tuesday by flying a kite at Shantiniketan Society in Ahmedabad.
The event was marked by a joyful atmosphere, with people coming together to celebrate the occasion, enjoying the age-old tradition of kite flying, a key part of Makar Sankranti celebrations.
The society was splendidly adorned with vibrant kites and intricate rangoli.
Shah and chief minister Bhupendra Patel received a gracious welcome from society members and locals whilst traditional dhol nagara and cultural performances enhanced the festivities.
“‘Makar Sankranti’ is a festival of unwavering faith in Indian culture and tradition. Heartiest greetings to the countrymen on this holy festival of energy, enthusiasm and progress,” Shah said on X.
The celebration signifies the Sun’s movement from Sagittarius into Capricorn, marking the start of Uttarayan. Taking a dip in sacred rivers such as the Ganga and Yamuna during Makar Sankranti is considered to purify one’s soul and grant spiritual benefits.
This auspicious day emphasises charitable giving and religious devotion. The festivities include special delicacies like sesame-jaggery laddus, khichdi, and various seasonal sweets. The popular practice of kite flying brings joy and enthusiasm to the celebrations.
Across India, this festival carries different regional names including Pongal, Bihu, and Maghi.
