Veer Savarkar college, flats for slum dwellers and World Trade Centre: PM Modi's infra push in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone for the Veer Savarkar College at Roshanpura, Najafgarh. The new college will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including academic blocks in East Delhi and Dwarka, aimed at providing modern learning environments for students. He also laid the foundation for three new projects at Delhi University worth over Rs 600 crore.
PM Modi inaugurated a series of development projects across the city, including 1,675 flats for residents of JJ clusters in Delhi. The flats, located at the Swabhiman Apartments in Ashok Vihar, are part of the government’s efforts to provide affordable housing to eligible beneficiaries in the economically weaker section (EWS).
The PM handed over keys to the flats, where beneficiaries will pay less than 7% of the total construction cost. For every Rs 25 lakh spent on building the flats, the beneficiaries contribute only Rs 1.42 lakh, with an additional Rs 30,000 allocated for five years of maintenance.
The government’s infrastructure drive comes ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, expected to be held in February, as the BJP intensifies efforts to challenge the AAP’s long-standing grip on power in the city.
PM Modi also inaugurated two major urban redevelopment projects: the World Trade Centre at Nauroji Nagar and the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Type-II quarters at Sarojini Nagar. The World Trade Centre has transformed the area by replacing over 600 dilapidated quarters with commercial towers, offering around 34 lakh square feet of premium commercial space. The towers are equipped with modern amenities and incorporate green building practices such as solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting, and a zero-discharge concept.
The GPRA Type-II quarters at Sarojini Nagar include 28 towers, housing over 2,500 residential units with advanced amenities and efficient use of space. This project emphasises eco-conscious living, with features like rainwater harvesting systems, sewage treatment plants, and solar-powered waste compactors.
PM Modi inaugurated the CBSE’s new integrated office complex at Dwarka. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 300 crore, the eco-friendly building includes offices, an auditorium, a data center, and a comprehensive water management system.
