Valentine’s Day shocker: Pune student finds dead mouse in chocolate shake ordered from cafe

PUNE: Airport police have registered a case against the owner of a Lohegaon cafe after a glass of chocolate shake ordered online from the establishment turned up with a dead mouse in it.
Police said the beverage was ordered on Friday night by two students in Lohegaon, through a food delivery app. “They had ordered the shake for Valentine’s Day. One of the students, a 21-year-old youth, opened the container and drank the contents, only to discover the dead mouse at the bottom of the glass. He immediately rushed to a hospital. Fortunately, doctors said he was fine,” assistant inspector Vijay Chandan of Airport police told TOI.
He said the two students had called up the cafe to complain after finding the dead animal. “But the cafe owner refused to accept it. We registered their complaint, and summoned the owner to the police station where he was served a notice ordering him to cooperate with the investigation,” inspector Chandan said.
He added that a preliminary probe found injury marks on the mouse. “It bore cuts. We suspect the mouse likely fell into a blender and was then packaged into the container by the cafe’s staff who didn’t see it,” he said.
Senior Inspector Ajay Sankeshwari of Airport police said the chocolate shake was delivered to the student’s doorstep via the app. “The drink was ordered by a friend of his for Valentine’s Day. He’s pursuing a postgraduate degree in management studies, but also works at a private company in the city. He drank from the container shortly after coming home to his flat in Lohegaon,” inspector Sankeshwari said.
The cafe owner now faces a case of endangering human life or personal safety of others.
