Amid much flip-flop and controversy over Second Lady Usha Vance’s visit to Greenland, the island that President Donald Trump wants to acquire, a tourism business that had initially invited Usha Vance announced Wednesday that it was canceling the planned meet-and-greet on her schedule after “closer consideration”. Greenland belongs to Greenlanders, Nuuk-based Tupilak Travel announced leaving no room for any speculation over why they took the decision.
“After closer consideration, however, we have now informed the consulate that we do not want her visit, as we cannot accept the underlying agenda and will not be part of the press show that, quite, of course, comes with it. No thanks to nice visit… Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” the company said on the same day Vice President JD Vance announced that he would accompany the Second Lady on her visit — that’s becoming contentious.
The company said that the US Consulate reached out to them to schedule a meet-and-greet with Usha. The store initially agreed as everyone is welcome to their souvenir store, as at that time it was being portrayed as a family holiday where Usha would be accompanied by one of her children.
Then it was reported that National Security advisor Mike Waltz will join Usha in Greeland, and then the Vice President announced that he “didn’t want to miss out on all the fun”.
Tempers were rising over the planned trip as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede criticized plans by a US delegation to visit the Arctic island uninvited, prompting a curtailed and revised schedule for the VP and his wife’s visit.
JD Vance and Usha will now only travel to Pitiffuk base to visit US Space Force members based there and “check out what’s going in with the security” of Greenland.
Doanld Trump Jr visited Greenland in January
Donald Trump Jr visited Greenland in January and the trip was characterized as a private visit, though it aligned with his father’s public statements about wanting to bring Greenland under US control. During his brief stay—reportedly lasting less than a day—Donald Trump Jr did not meet with Greenlandic government officials, members of parliament, or the prime minister. Instead, he was accompanied by a camera crew and, according to some reports, right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk. The group’s activities included distributing free food and MAGA hats to a small number of locals, who were then photographed and filmed posing with the items. Posts on X and various news outlets, including Danish and Greenlandic sources, have suggested that these individuals were primarily homeless or socially disadvantaged people, allegedly incentivized with hotel dinners or other offerings to participate in what some have called a staged event.
