MasterChef India‘s fondly known Gujjuben aka Urmila Asher passed away at the age of 79. The homecook inspired many by entering the culinary show at the age of 75 and impressing all with her authentic dishes. The judges and contestants fondly called her Baa. With her entrepreneurial journey to support her grandson, she entered the list of Forbes 50 after 50 as well.
The beloved Baa is survived by her husband, Jamnadas Asher and grandson. The family penned an emotional note sharing the sad news with her fans. It read, “A Life That Inspired Millions. With profound sorrow, we share the passing of Mrs. Urmila Jamnadas Asher — lovingly known to the world as Gujju Ben / Baa — on 07/04/2025. At 79, she became a symbol of courage, joy, and late blooming dreams. She reminded us that it’s never too late to start, to smile, to inspire. From her kitchen to your hearts, her warmth, laughter, and wisdom changed lives.”
The note concluded, “Let us not remember her with tears, but with the strength she showed us. The strength to be fearless. To love fully. To live joyfully. Baa’s journey doesn’t end here — it lives on in every person she touched, every laugh she shared, and every soul she inspired. We will carry her light forward.”
Chef Ranveer Brar also shared the post on his story and wrote, ‘Om Shaanti’. While all the contestants from MasterChef expressed their condolences in the comment section. Aruna Vijay wrote, “Always been an inspiration will miss you baa.” Gurkirat also penned, ‘U will always be in our hearts and memories Baa, we all love u a lot.’
Santa who was also her co-contestant, “We all r fortunate dat we get a chance to spend sometime with u. u will always be in our heart rest in heaven.” While Meghna added, ‘Had met Ba a couple of times and that energy and aura she always carried with her simplicity. This is so shocking and unexpected.. You have inspired so many people – my thoughts and prayers with the whole family. Am sure Gujjuben name will live on forever. It’s her legacy.’
Actors from Gujarati Industry Malhar Thakkar and Ojas Rawal also expressed grief.
