JAMSHEDPUR: Anuj Kanojia, a sharpshooter of the notorious Mukhtar Ansari gang of Uttar Pradesh, was killed in a shootout on the outskirts of Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur late Saturday. A UP DSP who was part of the operation was injured, reports B Sridhar. The 50-year-old had been on the run for five years. Kanojia was killed just a day after the first death anniversary of Ansari.
UP Police and Jharkhand Police carried out the joint operation, East Singhbhum SSP Kishore Kaushal said. One of Kanojia’s aides was arrested.
“The gangster and aides hurled a bomb and fired 15 rounds at us to escape after he found himself surrounded. We opened fire in retaliation as he refused to surrender. He was eventually shot,” SSP Kaushal said. Kanojia was rushed to the hospital and declared dead on arrival.
