AGRA: A 28-year-old police constable married a 25-year-old woman on Thursday, a day after she accused him of raping her “for the second time” and threatening to “kill her”.
Confirming the wedding on Friday, SHO of Kotwali, HB Singh Bhadauria, said, “A case (regarding the earlier rape) is already being heard in court. We’re not aware if there was any compromise in the matter.” The wedding was held in a temple in Mainpuri and attended by several people, including the constable’s lawyer.
Incidentally, hours earlier on Thursday morning, the survivor had filed a complaint at Kotwali police station, alleging that the constable, posted in Lucknow, raped her on Wednesday after threatening her to withdraw a prior sexual assault case. The previous case, registered under IPC section 376 (rape) in 2023, is currently being heard in a court in Mainpuri.
In her complaint on Thursday, she had stated: “A chargesheet was sent to court in Mainpuri and that case is pending in the district and sessions court… The constable is putting pressure on me to compromise in this case. He came to my house on Wednesday and threatened me to withdraw the rape case, or else he would kill me. When I refused, he raped me again and ransacked my house.”
Explaining the dramatic turn of events within a matter of hours, police sources said that an agreement was possibly reached at the local thana after talks between the two sides with the accused agreeing to marry her. It is not known whether there was any pressure on the woman from her family.
After marrying her “tormentor”, the woman said, “Yes, it has been done… Let’s see what happens next.”
The accused cop added, “There was a misunderstanding. So, she filed a police complaint against me. Now a compromise has been made and we decided to stay together after our wedding. There are no more disputes between us now.”
