Union Budget 2025-26: FM Sitharaman announces 'transformative reforms' across six key domains

NEW DELHI: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Union Budget 2025-26 on Saturday, outlined the government’s plan to implement “transformative reforms” across six key sectors, including taxation and the financial sector.
In her eighth successive budget presentation, Sitharaman highlighted that the government’s decade-long development achievements and structural modifications have garnered international recognition.
She emphasised that a Viksit Bharat would ensure elimination of poverty, superior education, and comprehensive healthcare accessibility. The Budget prioritises inclusive development for all segments of society.
“This Budget aims to initiate transformative reforms across six domains during the first five years. These will augment our growth potential and global competitiveness. The domains are taxation, power sector, urban development, mining, financial sector and regulatory reforms… agriculture as the first engine,” Sitharaman said.
She elaborated that the proposed development initiatives encompass 10 broad sectors, with particular attention to ‘garib’ youth, ‘anna daata’ and ‘nari’, promoting agricultural advancement, and strengthening rural prosperity and resilience.
The finance minister noted that India’s economic progression over the previous decade, alongside structural improvements, has captured worldwide attention.
She expressed confidence in growing international partnerships and investor trust, stating that the upcoming five-year period offers a significant opportunity to achieve Sabka Vikas, ensuring comprehensive development.
“Our economy is the fastest-growing among all major global economies. Our development track record of the past 10 years and structural reforms have drawn global attention. Confidence in India’s capability and potential has only grown in this period. We see the next five years as a unique opportunity to realize ‘Sabka Vikas’, stimulating balanced growth of all regions,” she added.
