'Threatened to make photos, videos viral': ‘Harassed’ by pradhan, girl dies by suicide in Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: A 16-year-old girl in Nigohan area died by suicide after alleged harassment by the gram pradhan late Tuesday, police said.
Authorities registered an FIR against the accused Navneet Rawat on Friday.
According to the victim’s brother, Rawat would visit their residence when his sister was alone.
“Navneet used to come home during elections. At first, we thought that he might be coming to get votes. Even after winning the election, his visits to our house continued like this. He won her confidence over the time and even gave her a mobile phone to talk to her,” her brother said.
He further said Rawat used to talk about marrying her.
“However, when she pressured him for marriage, he resorted to dilly-dally. He called my sister to meet him on Tuesday and refused to marry her. When she insisted, he beat her up. When she warned him that she would complain to the police, he threatened to make her photos and videos viral. She returned home crying and told mother everything. Our mother told her to talk to Navneet again on Wednesday morning, but before that, she committed suicide,” the brother said.
Police said at the time of incident, she was alone at home.
“When the neighbours saw her hanging from the ventilator, they informed the family. Her father reached home and took her to a hospital where the doctors declared her dead,” said Mohanlalganj ACP Rajneesh Kumar.
He said an FIR was lodged against Rawat under BNS sections 69 (intercourse through deceit), 108 (abetment to suicide), and 352 (intentional insult).
