MI Cape Town delivered a stunning performance at Newlands on Wednesday evening, securing a dominant victory over Sunrisers Eastern Cape and booking their first-ever spot in the SA20 Playoffs. Their resounding win set up a high-stakes Western Cape showdown against table-toppers Paarl Royals in Qualifier 1 at St George’s Park on February 4, with a direct ticket to the final at stake.
From the outset, MI Cape Town’s fielding unit was electric, with Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, and Reeza Hendricks pulling off spectacular catches to help dismiss Sunrisers for a mere 107. Inspired by their fielding efforts, the bowlers followed suit, led by Bosch’s SA20 career-best 4/19 and Kagiso Rabada‘s impressive 2/14.

The chase was clinical, with openers Ryan Rickelton (59 off 36) and Rassie van der Dussen (48 off 30) comfortably steering MI Cape Town to a 110-run unbroken partnership and an emphatic 10-wicket victory.
Reflecting on the team’s stellar performance, MI Cape Town’s star pacer Corbin Bosch praised the squad’s cohesion and form throughout the tournament. “The team has gelled really well together, and it’s helped that a lot of our players have been in form. Someone always steps up when needed. The guys at the top have batted beautifully, setting up games, and as a bowling unit, we’ve taken wickets at crucial times,” Bosch stated.
Bosch, who has been in sensational form, expressed his delight at his recent career growth. “I’m still on cloud nine. It’s been an incredible past few months. Six months ago, I wouldn’t have thought I’d be in this position, having played two different formats for my country. I’m just grateful to contribute to the team’s success,” he said.
The night saw some breathtaking catches, including one by Brevis, which Bosch described with humor. “When I saw the ball go up, I looked over at Dewald charging in and thought, ‘Please don’t go over your head!’ But he took an absolute screamer. My caught-and-bowled was instinctive; I just reacted, and it stuck.”
Looking ahead, Bosch emphasised the team’s focus. “We’re taking it one game at a time. Finishing at the top of the log would be a testament to the team’s consistency. Given our position in past seasons, this turnaround is incredible.”
Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s David Bedingham, who top-scored for his side with 45 off 45, acknowledged MI Cape Town’s dominance. “They’ve played really well at their home ground and look confident in all departments. But in semi-final cricket, anything can happen,” he said.
Bedingham also addressed his team’s batting struggles, attributing them to challenging wickets this season. “We’ve tried to see off the first three overs, but we’re still losing early wickets. The conditions have been tough, but hopefully, we can find our rhythm before the playoffs.”
With MI Cape Town riding high on confidence and Sunrisers seeking consistency, the upcoming playoff clashes promise high-intensity cricket. MI Cape Town’s dream of lifting the SA20 trophy edges closer, but with unpredictability in knockout matches, the battle is far from over.
