Temperature soaring! Heatwave alert for Mumbai & around till Tuesday

MUMBAI: The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad for three consecutive days starting March 9.
The weather bureau said that heatwave conditions at isolated places are very likely. From March 12, hot and humid weather conditions are expected to resume.
On Saturday, the day temperature recorded by the IMD were 35.4 degrees Celsius, which was three degrees above normal, and IMD Colaba was 34 degrees Celsius, which was 2.9 degrees above normal. Just a day ago, the day temperature recorded by the IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatory were 34.5 and 35.8 degrees Celius.
Weather enthusiast Abhijit Modak said that given the climatological progression into March, we anticipate a further temperature spike, potentially reaching 39 degrees Celsius in the early part of next week, under the influence of a high-pressure system.
“A persistent high-pressure system is hindering the early onset of the sea breeze in Mumbai. Normally, the sea breeze acts as a natural thermostat, providing relief to coastal areas. However, this year, its arrival has been delayed due to the absence of a dipping western disturbance trough. This has resulted in a prolonged period of dry land breezes persisting until 1-2 PM, allowing temperatures to rise significantly,” he pointed out.
