Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) has purchased US-based CDI Engineering Solutions, formerly Comprehensive Designers Inc (CDI). Part of the Tata Group, Tata Consulting Engineers is a design, engineering, and project management consultancy company. Tata Consulting Engineers or TCE has acquired Comprehensive Designers Inc with the aim to enter the North American market. TCE is a 100% subsidiary of Tata Sons.
The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
Founded in 1950, Houston-based CDI has over 600 employees. The combined organization aims to provide integrated solutions addressing critical global challenges, including clean energy transition, decarbonization, and resilient infrastructure. The acquisition of the 75-year-old CDI, which has a client base including several Fortune 500 companies, gives TCE eight US-based engineering centers and complements company’s existing strengths. TCE’s global delivery platform will now include CDI’s eight engineering centres in the US.
What TCE said on the acquisition of CDI
TCE stated that the acquisition is a “deliberate step” to expand its global reach and expertise. “The acquisition of CDI marks a deliberate step towards expanding TCE’s global footprint and scaling its expertise… With its expertise and a client base that includes several Fortune 500 companies, CDI’s capabilities complement TCE’s strengths in engineering design and project management,” TCE said in a statement.
TCE Managing Director and CEO Amit Sharma said that the combined entity will be a “competitive entity capable of delivering exceptional value to clients” and addressing global priorities like energy transition and sustainable infrastructure. CDI President Steve Karlovic highlighted the shared commitment to engineering excellence and sustainability, emphasizing the growth opportunities for employees.
TCE, originally founded in 1962 as Tata Ebasco (a joint venture between Tata Group and US-based Ebasco Services Inc.), became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons in 1968. In fiscal year 2024, TCE’s consolidated revenue was Rs 1,406 crore (approximately $170 million USD), with India accounting for roughly 60% and domestic government clients contributing about 35%, according to ICRA. The company employs over 6,000 people.
