'She hanged herself': How killer techie fooled tenant with lies to mislead police after murdering wife in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Rakesh Rajendra Khedekar, 36, who killed his wife Gouri Anil Sambrekar, 32, on March 26, tried to mislead the police by fabricating a story about her death.
In an attempt to cover up the crime, Rakesh called Prabhu Singh, one of the tenants on the ground floor of the building where he lived. He informed Singh his wife had committed suicide by hanging and asked him to alert cops and the building owner. Singh called the landlord, who dialled the police helpline.
‘He is misleading police’
“Rakesh appears to be acting as if he is mentally disturbed, but we suspect otherwise. He is perfectly fine and is just trying to gain sympathy by acting abnormal. He is misleading police. It appears he brought her to Bengaluru with a plan to kill her,” a senior officer said.
New city, tragic end
Rakesh and Gouri had recently relocated to Bengaluru from Mumbai, just a month ago. Both had quit their previous jobs; while Rakesh secured a work-from-home position at a tech company, Gouri was still searching for employment.
The fateful night
On Wednesday, Gouri cooked rice and gravy for dinner. According to Rakesh, they had a minor argument around 9 pm. He claimed that he slapped her, prompting Gouri to pick up a kitchen knife and throw it at him, causing a minor injury. Enraged, Rakesh allegedly grabbed the knife and stabbed her twice in the neck and once in the abdomen.
