LUCKNOW: In a story with unusual twists and turns, a man in Sant Kabir Nagar, fearing for his life after the infamous ‘drum murder case’ in Meerut and a contract killing in Auraiya, arranged his own wife’s marriage to her lover and became a witness to it.
However, four days later, the story took an unexpected turn when the woman’s new mother-in-law, moved by the plight of the estranged husband and his two children, sent her back to her first husband, saying she could not see them grow without their mother.
According to police, a 33-year-old electrician from a village in Sant Kabir Nagar got married in 2017 and the couple had a son in 2018 and a daughter in 2020.
Their life was ordinary until 2021, when his wife caught the attention of a youth (then 17) from the same village. The youth used to frequent the electrician’s home, and soon developed a relationship with his wife.
On March 20, she decided to elope with her lover leaving her two children behind. The woman’s husband filed a complaint after which the cops traced the duo within four days and brought them to the police station.
Since the woman had left willingly, locals, including the village pradhan, suggested that she should be married to her lover. The woman’s husband and his family eventually agreed to the suggestion and secured an affidavit stating he was voluntarily handing over his wife to her lover while retaining custody of their children.
On Mar 25, the marriage was solemnized at the temple inside the police station.
However, on Mar 28, the man reached the house of his wife’s new in-laws and requested her to come back claiming that it would be tough for him to raise the children alone.
Moved by his plight, the woman’s new mother-in-law agreed to send her back. “I felt bad for the children. They needed their mother,” she said.
Inspector RK Mishra said that considering the decision of the village head and residents, it was decided that the woman and her lover should get married. “However, now that the complainant wants his wife to return for the sake of their children, the final decision was left to the woman concerned. She ultimately chose to reunite with her first husband and her children,” he said.
