NEW DELHI: BJP MP Sambit Patra on Thursday targeted the Samajwadi Party for violating parliamentary decorum by allegedly presenting a “funeral shroud” for Election Commission in presence of the Lok Sabha Speaker.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Sambit Patra said, “As soon as the Parliament session started, the Samajwadi Party broke all decorum and presented a funeral shroud for the Election Commission in front of the Speaker… Such a misdeed had never happened in the parliamentary proceedings of India till now. The Election Commission is a constitutional institution and calling it dead and presenting a funeral shroud for it is a blow to democracy. The BJP demands that the stand of other opposition parties should be clear and the Samajwadi Party and Akhilesh Yadav should apologize for this misdeed in Parliament”
Earlier, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav raised serious allegations against the BJP, citing electoral misconduct and declaring the Election Commission “dead”.
“This is the manner in which BJP contests elections. The Election Commission is dead. We will have to gift them white cloth,” Yadav told ANI before entering the Parliament, criticising the electoral proceedings.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister reported that police officers were improperly checking voter identification at polling stations, which he considered voter intimidation. The Milkipur constituency in Ayodhya recorded 57.13% voter turnout on Wednesday.
As he posted on X and said, “The Election Commission should immediately take cognizance of the pictures related to this news that Ayodhya police is checking the ID cards of voters in Milkipur, in which senior police officers are also involved. This is a democratic crime of indirectly influencing voting by creating fear among voters. Such people should be removed immediately and punitive action should be taken”.
The SP chief also claimed that BJP supporters caused disruptions at several locations under police protection. He highlighted EVM issues, mentioning that interruptions at places like Kutia Amaniganj continued for over two hours, preventing voting.
However, Ayodhya police refuted these allegations, stating they were only verifying booth agents’ identities. “The above photo is of a booth agent’s identity card. The person seen in the photo is a booth agent of a candidate, which has been verified by checking his identity card. Please do not make misleading tweets,” the police responded on X.
The Milkipur bypoll represents a crucial contest between the SP and BJP.
The constituency, located in Ayodhya district, became vacant after Awadhesh Prasad won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Faizabad. SP aims to retain the seat, while BJP seeks to secure their only unsuccessful constituency in Ayodhya district from the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
