NEW DELHI: Paarl Royals captain David Miller shared his enthusiasm ahead of the third season of SA20, set to commence on January 9 with a blockbuster opener between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town at St George’s Park, Gqeberha.
The Royals begin their campaign on Saturday, January 11, against the defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Speaking on the sidelines of the SA20 Captains’ Day event, Miller reflected on the team’s mix of experienced stars and young talent.

“We’re looking forward to this year with those particularly experienced players,” Miller said, highlighting the addition of England’s Joe Root, lauding the former Test captain’s potential impact both on and off the field.
“For me, Joe Root adds a lot more than just success on the field. He’s got a heap of experience and, obviously, is one of the best batters in the world ever, as we’ve seen in Test matches. I know it’s a different format, but just the solidity that he brings to the squad is what we need, especially in our home conditions. We’re going to use him very closely for our success,” Miller remarked.
Miller also praised Root’s personality and influence outside the game. “As a person, he adds a lot off the field with the youngsters, is very passionate about the game itself, and adds huge experience in that department and in the growth of the game as well.”
The Royals’ skipper expressed equal admiration for Indian veteran Dinesh Karthik, who joined the franchise for Season 3. “Much the same with Dinesh Karthik. You know, he’s got a wealth of experience, and it’s great to have him, someone who’s also so passionate and can add so much to the team,” Miller said.
Recalling their past association, Miller added, “I know from 12 or 13 years back, we played together at Kings XI Punjab (in IPL). It’s just nice to be playing with him again. What a great character he is, an ambassador of the game, and all the knowledge he can share from his experience over the last 20 years.”
With a dynamic squad featuring both seasoned professionals and promising youngsters, Miller remains optimistic. “We’ve got a really young team this year, which is exciting.”
Nevertheless, the Royals’ challenge will be picking a balanced eleven, as only four overseas players can be fielded per match. However, with stars like Root, Karthik, and Lungi Ngidi, along with emerging talent, the team appears well-equipped for a strong campaign this time.
