NEW DELHI: A dozen states have so far utilised Rs 22.8 crore of central funds put at their disposal for aiding the release of poor prisoners stuck in jails due to their inability to pay fine or furnish bail bond, junior home minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Under the scheme, the central govt has made a provision of Rs 20 crore each for 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 for extending financial assistance to poor prisoners who are unable to walk free either due to inability to pay fine, even after completing the prison sentence, or furnish bond for release on bail.
