NEW DELHI: A rape suspect was shot in the leg while attempting to escape police custody in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
The accused, Aman Putra Chand Khan, who was arrested for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl, snatched a police officer’s pistol and fired at the police team before being subdued.
The incident occurred while Khan was being escorted to court for a medical examination. He requested a bathroom break near Nagla Konda and attacked the Bisawar checkpost officer accompanying him.
After grabbing the officer’s weapon, Khan fired at the police vehicle. Law enforcement responded with gunfire, striking him in the right leg.
“Last night, an FIR was filed at Sadabad Kotwali regarding the rape of a minor girl and the accused, Aman Putra Chand Khan, was arrested. Today, while being taken for a medical examination before his court appearance, he asked to use the bathroom near Nagla Konda. The Bisawar checkpost in-charge accompanied him. Suddenly, the accused snatched the officer’s pistol and fired, hitting our police jeep. In response, the inspector in charge shot back, injuring him in his right leg,” said Hathras SP Chiranjeev Nath Sinha.
Police successfully recaptured Khan following the incident. “He has been sent to the District Hospital, and necessary legal actions are being taken,” SP Sinha added.
The accused had initially been arrested after a complaint was filed at the Sadabad Kotwali police station regarding the rape of a minor girl.
