MOHALI: In violation of Supreme Court orders, illegal life-size hoardings of rape-convicted, self-styled Christian preacher Bajinder Singh have been placed along highways in Majri, Mullanpur, Zirakpur, and Derabassi areas of Punjab’s Mohali district.
These hoardings, which showcase Bajinder’s sermons, propagate a controversial figure and pose a significant traffic hazard. The local municipal council, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and the district administration failed to check such violations and prevent the unauthorised display of hoardings along highways, despite clear legal restrictions.
Supreme Court directives prohibit such distracting visuals near highways due to their potential to cause accidents. When contacted, Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal said, “I will get such hoardings checked and remove them immediately.”
Bajinder Singh, a self-styled godman who was promoting himself as a spiritual healer, gained popularity through his worship camps in Majri, Mullanpur, Zirakpur, and Derabassi. Recently, a Mohali court sentenced him to life imprisonment till death after finding him guilty of raping a follower at his Zirakpur centre. Additionally, multiple other accusations of sexual assault surfaced against him in various districts, further tarnishing his image.
Bajinder’s journey to becoming a pastor was itself steeped in controversy. Born into a Hindu Jatt family, he had a criminal record, including involvement in a murder case in the early 2000s. It was during his incarceration that he converted to Christianity and later emerged as a preacher, amassing a large following. His sermons gained massive traction on social media platforms like YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.
