NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit Sri Lanka in April, the island country’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake confirmed on Friday.
It seems that PM Modi will visit Sri Lanka on April 5 after attending the BIMSTECH summit in Thailand. PM Modi is likely to visit Thailand from April 2-4 to attend the sixth Summit in Bangkok, according to the ANI news agency.
In Sri Lanka, according to the news portal Adaderana.lk, PM Modi’s visit aims to conclude agreements discussed during President Dissanayake’s December Delhi trip.
During his visit, Dissanayake conveyed his deep appreciation for the support extended by India during and after the unprecedented economic crisis in 2022. India, economically, helped Sri Lanka to stand on its own feet.
The construction of the Sampur Power Plant in Trincomalee’s eastern port district is set to begin concurrent with Modi’s visit, as stated by the president in Parliament. Dissanayake attributed Modi’s upcoming visit to Sri Lanka’s current stability.
In a recent development, health minister Nalinda Jayathissa revealed that Sri Lanka and India have agreed to establish solar power facilities in the island nation. The agreement outlines a joint venture between the Ceylon Electricity Board and National Thermal Power Corporation of India to construct and operate solar power plants at Sampur, Trincomalee. The project comprises two stages: 50 Megawatt capacity in stage one and 70 Megawatt in stage two.
The site, previously designated for a coal power plant by the National Thermal Power Corporation of India, will now host a solar power station under this revised collaboration.
