BENGALURU: Space technology company Pixxel and insurance provider Kita have formed a partnership to enhance monitoring and risk assessment for carbon projects. The collaboration aims to use Pixxel’s hyperspectral satellite data to support Kita’s insurance and monitoring services.
Kita serves clients including commodity traders, development banks, investment funds, and insurance companies that manage sustainability programmes. The company will use Pixxel’s data to develop risk modelling for blue carbon, afforestation, and vegetation stress assessment projects.
“Kita’s mission is to help fund the fight against climate change by managing the risks associated with investing in carbon solutions. Pixxel’s data will enable us to build the next generation of risk models to more accurately track emerging risks in real-time,” said Paul Young, CTO and Co-Founder of Kita.
Current methods for estimating above-ground biomass and forest growth rely on broad averages. Pixxel’s hyperspectral technology captures biophysical and biochemical indicators at a species level, providing detailed data about ecosystem health. The technology also supports monitoring of carbon removal approaches like regenerative agriculture, enhanced weathering, and biochar.
“The partnership with Kita underscores the potential of hyperspectral technology at the intersection of carbon and insurance markets,” said Awais Ahmed, Founder and CEO of Pixxel.
Pixxel recently launched three commercial hyperspectral satellites aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-12, with three additional satellites planned for Q2 2025. The satellites collect data across 150+ spectral bands at 5m resolution and 40 km swath width with daily revisit capability.
