Oyo launches new check-in policy starting January 2025: Unmarried couples will no longer be ...

Oyo has introduced a new check-in policy in Meerut, barring unmarried couples from staying at its partner hotels. Under the updated guidelines, all couples will be required to present valid proof of their relationship at check-in, even for online bookings. The policy, as per a PTI report came into effect in January this year. The company has also given partner hotels the discretion to decline couple bookings based on their judgment, citing alignment with local social sensibilities.
The directive is currently limited to Meerut, but may be expanded to other cities. “Based on ground feedback, the company may expand this to more cities, people familiar with the policy change said,” the report said.

What the company said

In a statement, the company said: “Oyo has received feedback in the past from civil society groups especially in Meerut urging action to address this issue. Additionally, residents from few other cities have petitioned for disallowing unmarried couples to check-in at Oyo hotels”.
Pawas Sharma, Region Head, Oyo North India, told PTI, “Oyo is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and work with the law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets we operate in. We will continue to review this policy and its impact periodically”.

How social media reacted

Internet users have unleashed a meme fest that’s equal parts hilarious and dramatic! “Oyo digging their own grave in india,” said one user.
