OpenAI‘s ChatGPT has just updated its terms and conditions on Studio Ghibli-style photos. As per the change in policy, users may now no longer use all real-world images to make Ghibli-style photos. “I wasn’t able to generate a Ghibli-style portrait from your last image due to content policy limitations around creating likenesses of real people. However, I can absolutely create a Ghibli-style portrait based on a description! Just let me know some details — like hairstyle, clothing, background, mood, or anything else you’d like — and I’ll create a stylized version inspired by that. Want to give it a go?” says the message that comes on ChatGPT image generator when one tries to make Ghibli-style photos from prompts given.
OpenAI on some users not able to make images
It is not exactly clear what is the exact change in OpenAI’s terms and conditions for these photos. In a statement to Business Insider, OpenAI spokesperson said that it is taking a “conservative approach” to images using artists’ work in this model. “We added a refusal which triggers when a user attempts to generate an image in the style of a living artist,” the company said. “We’re always learning from real-world use and feedback, and we’ll keep refining our policies as we go,” the spokesperson added.
Incidentally, the creator of the Japanese animation Studio Ghibli that has long inspired fan art and memes has criticised AI on several occasions. The Ghibli-style photos created from ChatGPT’s image generator update that have flooded the internet once again point to blatant copyright infringement by AI tools.

Image Generator rollout to non-paying users delayed
For now, OpenAI has delayed the rollout of its new image tool to free-tier users, citing high demand. OpenAI CEO SAm Altman said in a post on Twitter, “images in chatgpt are wayyyy more popular than we expected (and we had pretty high expectations). rollout to our free tier is unfortunately going to be delayed for awhile.”
OpenAI’s latest update comes just days after Google’s release of a similar AI image feature in its Gemini Flash model, which also sparked a viral moment when people used it to remove watermarks from images.
