NOIDA: Deepak Kumar, a car dealer from Ajmer who was behind the wheel of the Lamborghini Huracan that veered onto a pavement in Noida Sector 94 and injured two construction workers on Sunday evening, has told police he was distracted when an error message flashed on the vehicle’s display board, leading to the crash.
The Huracan is owned by Mridul Tiwari — a resident of Supernova in Sector 94 who has around 19 million subscribers on YouTube, where he uploads videos focusing on comedy. Tiwari was not in the car when the accident occurred around 5pm on Sunday.
Deepak secured a bail on Monday after posting a bond of Rs 25,000. His family took him to Ajmer, where he has a showroom dealing in luxury cars.
On Sunday, Deepak was in Noida to evaluate the performance of the Huracan, which Mridul wanted to sell. He took the supercar out for a test drive and did some shopping. On his way back, he lost control of the speeding vehicle, which veered onto the pavement of an under-construction building and struck two daily wagers waiting for their bus.
“During questioning, Kumar admitted he was driving at high speed. He suddenly noticed an error message on the display screen, which diverted his attention. This momentary distraction caused him to lose control and resulted in the accident,” a police officer said.
An FIR was registered against Deepak under sections 281 (rash driving) and 125(a) (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the BNS.
Rambhu Kumar and Vijen Ravidas — the two workers hit by the luxury car — are currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Noida. Both suffered multiple fractures when the impact threw them into a nearby drain.
“The initial assessment was challenging because of the circumstances that led to their fall into the drain. Both patients require surgery, and we expect their recovery to take 4-8 weeks. We’re currently conducting pre-surgery evaluations and awaiting necessary approvals,” a doctor treating them said.
Ravidas recounted the moment they were struck. “The red car was moving so fast we couldn’t react. After hitting us, it tried to move away, but couldn’t. I suffered injuries to my head, eye, nose, and chest. The impact fractured my leg as well,” he added.
The other victim, Rambhu, described being hit with such force that they were thrown into the drain. “The car must have been doing around 300kmph,” he claimed from his hospital bed.
Confronted by some workers and passersby at the accident site, Deepak — still on the driver’s seat — asked if anyone was dead. A 51-second video widely circulated on social media captured an exchange between the driver and a bystander.
The footage shows the bystander asking, “Are you practising stunts?” The driver responds casually, “Is anyone dead?”. The passerby then tells others to call police.
The accident deeply affected the victims’ families. Gangaram Das, Vijen’s son who works at the same construction site, expressed concern about his father’s condition. “We’ve been working in Noida for four years. My father, who’s over 60, isn’t showing signs of improvement. The doctors aren’t forthcoming with information either,” he said.
Shankar, Rambhu’s father-in-law, said his son-in-law had married his daughter four years ago, and they have a young daughter in Jharkhand.
Mayank Pachauri, Deepak’s lawyer, said his client had left for Ajmer. “The offence was bailable,” he added.
