Mizoram church urges its members to have more babies, save faith

AIZAWL: Baptist Church of Mizoram (BCM), the second largest church denomination in the state, has decided to push for baby boom by creating awareness on the increase in population that will not only be beneficial for Mizoram but will also have a positive impact on the religion.
Delegates of the 129th assembly, the highest decision making authority of the BCM, passed an agenda advocating and appealing to married couples among the church members to conceive more babies.
Earlier, Mizoram Presbyterian Church also had encouraged married couples to have more babies.
“If the Mizos witness a decrease in population as the current trend, it will be disastrous in the near future and it will have adverse effects on the society and the state as well as the religion and church. We have to create awareness for increasing the population,” delegates of the assembly agreed while passing an agenda.
The assembly also agreed to combat rampant drug addiction and the spread of HIV/AIDS causing deaths of many youths in the state as well as corruption and other social ills. The delegates agreed that all the local churches should be asked to constitute committees to deal with these social problems.
While an agenda seeking to ban for life retired Baptist church pastors, who have dedicated to serve God and the church, from joining politics was rejected, the assembly delegates agreed that the public feel that even those political parties which vowed to work for the people are not living up to expectations.
Earlier, the BCM had decided to leave the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of leaders of 16 major church denominations, and also rejected the invitation to join the Mizoram Presbyterian Church-led Mizoram People’s Forum (MPF), an election watchdog which included civil societies.
