Mistaking acid for water, woman suffering depression following husband's demise dies in Meerut

MEERUT: A 78-year-old woman allegedly died after consuming ‘acid’ in Achharonda village under the jurisdiction of Partapur police station on Thursday, police said. SHO Dilip Singh Bisht told TOI that the deceased, Rajbala Devi, had been suffering from depression following the death of her husband six months ago.
“On Thursday morning, she accidentally consumed acid, mistaking it for water,” he said. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead. The police sent the body for an autopsy, which confirmed that the cause of death was acid consumption.
The SHO further added that no FIR was filed in the case, though they will investigate why the acid bottle was in the deceased’s house.
Another similar incident happened in Kiratpur village on January 15.
A mentally challenged 19-year-old woman lost her life after reportedly consuming acid stored in her house’s toilet in Kiratpur village, under Bhamora police station jurisdiction, late on January 16.
The situation was discovered when her relatives found her in poor health and transported her to the district hospital, where she died on January 17.
The victim’s uncle, Prempal, informed authorities that Kumari Pilkush accidentally consumed acid from the toilet, resulting in her critical state. Despite receiving prompt medical care, her health deteriorated, leading to her death during treatment on Friday.
Circle Officer (CO) Pankaj Srivastava stated that whilst the woman’s relatives initially declined a post-mortem examination, they later accepted after police persuasion. Following the autopsy on Friday evening, the body was released to the family.
The relatives disclosed that the woman had sustained a severe head trauma two years prior, which had not completely recovered despite medical intervention.
