Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, plans to spend up to $65 billion in 2025 to dramatically expand its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced.
The substantial capital expenditure represents a significant increase from the company’s $38-40 billion spending in 2024. Zuckerberg aims to position Meta as a leading AI technology developer, with ambitious goals including building a data center large enough to cover a substantial portion of Manhattan and acquiring over 1.3 million graphics processing units (GPUs) by year’s end.
The investment comes just days after President Donald Trump unveiled the Stargate initiative, a $500 billion AI infrastructure project backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. Zuckerberg’s announcement is widely seen as a strategic response to maintain Meta’s competitive edge in artificial intelligence.
The company plans to significantly expand its AI workforce and develop an internal “AI engineer” capable of contributing to research and development coding tasks. Zuckerberg expects Meta’s AI assistant to serve more than 1 billion people in 2025, up from approximately 600 million monthly active users last year.
Meta’s open-source approach with its Llama AI models, which allows free usage by consumers and businesses, distinguishes its strategy from rival tech companies. The substantial investment underscores the tech industry’s ongoing commitment to artificial intelligence development.
