NEW DELHI: The Govt slammed Washington Post for its reports claiming covert operations by India in the Maldives and Pakistan, saying both the newspaper and reporter in question appeared to “nurse compulsive hostility” towards India and had no credibility left.
“You can see a pattern in their activities. I leave you to judge their credibility. As far as we are concerned, they have none,” the MEA spokesperson said responding to media queries.
The Post had linked India to an alleged campaign by the Maldives opposition to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu in the middle of strained relations with India. In another report, it had alleged a campaign of covert killings in Pakistan by Indian agents. Quoting unnamed Pakistani and western officials, the Post claimed the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), was carrying out a programme since 2021 to “kill at least a half a dozen people” inside Pakistan.
On Pakistani deputy PM and foreign minister Ishaq Dar’s statement regarding ties with India, that it takes two to tango, the Indian official said, “the relevant ‘T’ word here is terrorism and not tango”. “As regards Pakistan, I remind you of what Hillary Clinton said – “You can’t keep snakes in your backyard and expect them only to bite your neighbours,” the spokesperson said. Clinton had made the comment in a message to Pakistan in 2011, when she was serving as US secretary of state. on the issue of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
