IMPHAL: Central Village Defence Force (CVDF) has announced a total shutdown in Churachandpur, demanding a public apology from the Kuki National Front (KNF) group in accordance with traditional tribal practices.
In a press statement, the CVDF reported that on Dec 29 night, KNF commander Thahpi from Matijang, along with 10 armed men, entered the CVDF compound and called for a midnight meeting.The CVDF suggested holding the meeting during the day instead, but in response, commander Thahpi’s group opened fire at the compound.
“This unprovoked attack is deeply concerning and goes against the spirit of tribal unity,” the statement read, adding that the incident raises serious questions amid ongoing ethnic conflicts, particularly with the Meiteis being the primary adversaries of tribal communities in Manipur.
The CVDF questioned why Kuki groups are turning against their fellow tribals, speculating whether this could be due to Meitei influence through financial or other means. “The situation is alarming and calls for immediate attention,” the statement added.
CVDF volunteers have been defending against Meitei attacks at the Lailokphai duty post, enduring harsh winter nights to protect their community.
Meanwhile, Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) has requested the exemption of genuine Thadou individuals from the Kuki-Zomi tensions in Churachandpur. In a letter to the Zomi Council chairman, TIM president M James Thadou urged respect for the distinct identity of the Thadou people, separate from the Kuki group. He also called for an understanding of the complex history of the Thadous and asked Zomi volunteers to avoid harming or restricting the movements of Thadou individuals who are not Kukis.
TIM has appealed to both the Zomi and Kuki groups to engage in peaceful dialogue and work towards peaceful coexistence among all communities in Churachandpur district.
Additionally, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has warned of an indefinite economic blockade on NH-2 if the govt fails to withdraw central forces from the Saibol area immediately.
