Man dies in UP cop custody, kin allege torture

MEERUT: A man detained by Sambhal police over a monetary dispute suffered a cardiac arrest and died after he was allegedly denied access to his heart medication in custody at the Raisatti outpost of Nakhasa police station on Monday, reports Sandeep Rai. Police have denied the allegations made by the family of Mohd Irfan, 50, asserting he had taken his medication before he collapsed.
Irfan was detained with his son after his aunt, Shafiq Begum, filed a complaint regarding a dispute allegedly over Rs 6 lakh. His wife Reshma said, “Five policemen took my husband despite him having undergone surgery two days ago. He was on prescribed medication but wasn’t allowed to take them.”
Police claimed Irfan was taken to a doctor, who advised tranferring him to another medical centre, but the family returned to the outpost. Police said CCTV footage shows Irfan taking his medication.
