PRAYAGRAJ: At the Maha Kumbh, a unique recruitment has commenced — of candidates for initiation as Naga sadhus.
Thousands of young sanyasis ready to become Nagas in different akharas, with the intention of sacrificing everything for Sanatan Dharma, have applied for the same. The process has begun in the akharas wherein registration is being done. The akhara issues registration slips and, along with this, people who want to become Nagas are being secretly interviewed. Their forms are being checked. Those who meet all the criteria in the Juna, Shri Niranjani, Shri Mahanirvani, Aawahan, Atal and Anand akharas will be initiated into Naga Sanyas.
The ritual for initiation of Naga sadhus was performed on the banks of the Ganga for the first batch. The initiation process will be carried out on different days in each akhara. On Saturday, mundan (tonsuring) was performed for sanyasis in Juna Akhara.
Naga initiation will be complete on Amrit Snan night
These sanyasis performed their own pind daan (a ritual for departed souls), thereby declaring they, though still alive, have no association with the materialist world.
After mundan and pind daan, complete initiation to become a Naga will be held on the night of Amrit Snan festival of Mauni Amavasya. All candidates will stand naked under the flag of religion. Acharya Mahamandleshwar will initiate them into becoming Nagas with rituals. The sabhapati (person presiding over the ceremony) will inform them about the akhara’s rules and regulations and administer a pledge. After the process is complete, everyone will be sent for Amrit Snaan.
About 2,000 people will be initiated into Naga Sanyas in the Juna Akhara and 1,100 sadhus will be made Naga sanyasis at Shri Niranjani Akhara. Similarly, the process has begun in Shri Mahanirvani, Atal, Anand and Aawahan akharas.
During screening of applications, 53 people of Juna Akhara and 22 of Niranjani Akhara were found ineligible. Applicants were screened thoroughly at three levels. The investigation process starts six months in advance.
The thanapati of the akhara, Ashtakoshal Mahant, investigates the candidate’s profile and activities. The report is given to Acharya Mahamandleshwar of the akhara. The Acharya Mahamandleshwar gets the investigation done again by Panchs of the akhara.
