Madhya Pradesh heart surgery deaths: 'UK doctor' N John Camm detained from UP amid Damoh Hospital controversy

BHOPAL: In a major development, Dr N John Camm — at the center of a growing medical scandal in Madhya Pradesh — has been reportedly detained from Uttar Pradesh.
His detention comes ahead of a planned visit by a team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to Mission Hospital in Damoh district, where the doctor allegedly performed multiple high-risk heart surgeries resulting in several patient deaths.
The controversy erupted after it was revealed that Dr Camm, who reportedly carried out 15 heart surgeries between December 2024 and February 2025, is being linked to the deaths of at least seven patients during or shortly after these procedures. Preliminary investigations were carried out by CMHO Dr Mukesh Jain and DHO Dr Vikram Chauhan. “We have submitted a report to the collector. Nothing more can be said,” Dr Jain told TOI.
Dr Camm had reportedly been living in a hotel room for the past month before disappearing amid rising suspicion and public outcry. His detention marks a turning point in the investigation, which has attracted national attention. NHRC member Priyank Kanungo confirmed that the commission is closely monitoring the situation and a team may visit Damoh on Monday to assess conditions at the hospital.
The issue gained momentum when Deepak Tiwari, the district president of the Child Welfare Committee, raised concerns about discrepancies in the doctor’s identity and qualifications. Tiwari claimed that several patients, skeptical of the doctor’s credentials, opted for treatment at other hospitals and survived.
