London’s Heathrow Airport announced its closure until midnight on March 21 following a significant power outage caused by a massive fire at an electrical substation.
The disruption has led to widespread flight cancellations, with authorities urging passengers not to travel to the airport until further notice.
The airport authorities in a post on X said, “Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage. To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March. Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
“Expect significant disruption over the coming days, passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens,” Heathrow officials stated.
Fire crews are responding to the incident, but airport authorities have no clarity on when power will be restored. As a precaution, Heathrow has temporarily shut down operations.
“To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March,” the airport confirmed.
Travellers have been advised to check with their airlines for updates, as the outage is expected to cause ongoing disruptions to flight schedules.
