KOCHI/KASARAGOD: A CBI court on Friday sentenced 10 accused to life imprisonment and four others, including former CPM MLA from Uduma KV Kunhiraman, to five years in jail for the murder of two Youth Congress workers at Periya in Kerala’s Kasaragod in February 2019. The court had found them guilty on Saturday.
The 10 accused were given life imprisonment under two counts of murder and criminal conspiracy. A fine of Rs 2 lakh each has also been imposed on them. The case pertains to the murder of Youth Congress at Periya on Feb 17, 2019 while returning home on a motorbike. They were assaulted by a hit team with weapons.
“This case reflects and represents the bizarre offshoot of political vandalism culminating in the premature death of two vibrant youths,” the judge said. In Kasaragod, emotions ran high at the memorial of two victims as the court pronounced the verdict. Parents and relatives broke into tears, expressing dissatisfaction over the quantum of punishment. They said they expected death penalty for the convicts.
