KOLKATA: The family of the 31-year-old resident doctor who was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Aug 9 last year expressed partial relief after main accused Sanjay Roy was convicted on Saturday. However, they continued to demand justice, alleging more people were involved in the crime.
“With this verdict, we have crossed the first step to secure justice. With the sentencing on Monday, we hope to have our feet on the second step,” said her father, who broke down in tears in the packed Sealdah trial court.
The father emphasised the family’s suspicion of a larger conspiracy. “CBI officers came to our house and tried to convince us that only Sanjay Roy was responsible. We suspected they were not considering a lot of factors. CBI itself said in the Supreme Court that it was a larger conspiracy. A larger conspiracy should involve a number of people,” he said.
The family has moved the Supreme Court, questioning the CBI investigation. “We will be truly satisfied only when, alongside Sanjay, all the other culprits are sentenced to death,” the mother said.
Alleging a cover-up, the family said their daughter was targeted because she had opposed the use of counterfeit medicines in the state-run hospital. “Had evidence not been tampered with, all culprits would have already been exposed,” the father said.
The victim’s mother added,“There was an invisible hand orchestrating the entire episode after the crime. The hospital authorities did not even take the initiative to lodge an FIR. This raises suspicion. We have raised 54 such questions and CBI will have to answer all of these. We will get to the bottom of the facts.”
