The Los Angeles Lakers are at the brink of a critical trade deadline as they aim to make their roster ready for a championship run. With recent trades already in the books, the Lakers are reportedly setting their sights on Brooklyn Nets center Day’Ron Sharpe to address a pressing need for defensive depth.
According to sources, the Lakers inquired about Sharpe during their acquisition of Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton. While Finney-Smith has made a strong defensive impact, Milton has slipped to the edges of the rotation. However, the Lakers understand more work is needed to build a championship-caliber team.
The Brooklyn Nets has expressed interest in keeping Sharpe unless additional draft compensation is included, according to reports. Sharpe’s potential move could provide the Lakers with much-needed shot-blocking and defensive consistency off the bench. Adding Sharpe into that would cost more draft compensation.
At just 22 years old, Day’Ron Sharpe has shown promise despite limited action this season, averaging 7.3 points and 6.1 rebounds across 15 games. Known for his high-energy performances, Sharpe could give Los Angeles a vital boost in maintaining their defensive intensity when Anthony Davis is resting.
Currently, Davis shoulders much of the defensive burden, delivering stellar performances with averages of 25.8 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game. However, the Lakers lack a reliable backup center to step in without compromising their defensive performance.

Sharpe’s skill set, particularly in shot-blocking, aligns with the Lakers’ immediate needs. Acquiring Sharpe alone won’t solve all of the Lakers’ problems. Offensively, the team is still seeking solutions, especially in the backcourt. With D’Angelo Russell no longer part of the lineup, the Lakers are in dire need of a playmaking guard.
LeBron James continues to be the team’s cornerstone, but relying on the 39-year-old superstar for extensive playmaking duties could hinder his long-term effectiveness. As the trade deadline approaches, fans are eager to see management act decisively.
The Los Angeles Lakers’ recent additions of Finney-Smith and Milton signaled their commitment to strengthening the roster. Still, the team recognizes the importance of addressing both defensive and offensive gaps. A potential trade for Sharpe could be the starting point, but bringing in a guard capable of creating opportunities for teammates remains critical.
