AGRA: On the day CM Yogi Adityanath was in Agra, members of right-wing outfit Karni Sena vandalised the residence of Samajwadi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman in the city and injured several police officers on Wednesday after storming the area with a bulldozer during a protest over a Parliament speech referencing Rajput king Rana Sanga. The group broke through police barricades near MG Road, clashed with officers, and damaged vehicles and the entrance gate of the MP’s house before a baton charge dispersed the crowd.
Suman was allegedly targeted for his comments in Parliament, where he said, “BJP leaders often claim that Muslims have the DNA of Babur. But Indian Muslims do not consider Babur their ideal. In fact, who brought Babur to India? It was Rana Sanga who invited him to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. By that logic, if you claim Muslims are the descendants of Babur, then you are also the descendants of Rana Sanga — a traitor.”
While Suman was in Delhi attending Parliament, his son, former MLC Ranjit Suman, said the family had received threats online and accused the local administration of ignoring warnings. “On social media platforms, they said they will lay siege to our house. The administration was aware that a protest was planned by Karni Sena, but no action was taken. Today, armed with sticks and swords, they damaged our house and also the houses of other people in the locality. Many people have been injured,” he said.
Footage showed protesters waving saffron flags, shouting slogans, and breaking through barriers to reach Suman’s house. Though they brought a bulldozer, police intercepted it before it reached the residence. Still, the group damaged several vehicles and clashed with officers, leaving at least 15 personnel injured, including inspector Alok Kumar Singh.
Agra DCP Sonam Kumar said police detained 10 people and an FIR has been lodged. “At least 15 cops, including inspector Singh, have been injured. Teams have been constituted, and we will arrest all the accused involved in the incident,” she said.
Mahipal Singh Makrana, national president of Shree Rajput Karni Sena, called the incident “a trailer” and warned of a larger protest if action was not taken against Suman. “We will stage a bigger protest if no action is taken against him. We will punish Suman for insulting the Rajput warrior who never faced defeat in his life.”
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav condemned the attack, linking it to Suman’s Dalit identity. In a post on social media, he said, “Even with the chief minister present in Agra, when a violent incident of vandalism by some people at the house of a PDA MP cannot be stopped, then zero tolerance is bound to be zero indeed. Is the chief minister’s sphere of influence shrinking day by day, or is it that no one is listening to the ‘outgoing CM’ anymore? If he is still the chief minister, then take immediate action and identify and punish the culprits…”
