The recent rise in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory illness with symptoms resembling influenza and Covid-19, has prompted global health authorities to increase surveillance. The virus is now drawing attention in India following confirmed cases in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
HMPV Cases in India
On Monday, two cases of HMPV were reported in Bengaluru, Karnataka, involving a 3-month-old baby and an 8-month-old child. Both patients, with no history of international travel, were treated locally. While the 3-month-old has been discharged, the 8-month-old is recovering, according to the Union Health Ministry. Additionally, a third case was reported today in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where a child was diagnosed. As per reports, the condition of the child is currently stable. The Centre has yet to officially confirm the Gujarat case.
