NEW DELHI: The first meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the ‘one nation, one election’ bills is scheduled for Wednesday, with the primary focus on introducing the members to the two key bills.
The bills were introduced in Lok Sabha on December 17 after a heated debate. The JPC, chaired by BJP’s P P Chaudhary, comprises 39 members, with 27 from Lok Sabha and 12 from Rajya Sabha, reflecting a broad spectrum of political parties.
This legislative proposal has been a long-standing agenda of BJP, backed by Modi, who sees it as a step towards reducing the frequency of polls, thereby saving costs and allowing more time for governance. Opposition has called the bills “dictatorial”. The discussions on Wednesday, sources said, will revolve around understanding the legal, constitutional and logistical aspects of implementing such a change to electoral system. The JPC has been given 90 days to submit its report.
