Jasprit Bumrah‘s record-breaking show in the five-Test Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) earned him high praise from batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who called him the “best in the world”.
With 32 wickets, Bumrah broke the record for most wickets in a single away Test series for India, going past spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi’s 31 wickets during the 1977-78 tour of Australia. He also equalled former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh’s record of 32 wickets, which is the most by a bowler in a BGT series.

Bumrah’s remarkable statistics included an impressive average of 12.64 and three five-wicket spells, with his best figures being 6/76.
He was named the ‘Player of the Series’ for his stupendous show.
However, it couldn’t prevent a series defeat for India, as the visitors’ batting unit had a forgettable tour. India lost the series 1-3 as Australia turned a 0-1 deficit around to win three of the next four Tests.
Bumrah couldn’t take the field on the last day of the Sydney Test because of back spasms, with Australia chasing 162 runs to win.
The 3-1 scoreline also eliminated India from the qualification race for the World Test Championships final, which will now be contested between defending champions Australia and South Africa.
The WTC final is scheduled for June this year at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
