India stresses strategic autonomy amid US envoy's remarks

New Delhi: India responded firmly on Friday to comments made by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti, emphasising that India values its “strategic autonomy” and does not agree with the envoy’s perspective.
Garcetti, while speaking at an event in Delhi on July 11, suggested that “strategic autonomy” has limitations during times of conflict and highlighted the need for countries like India and the US to uphold principles in the face of rule violations and border breaches.
Though Garcetti did not directly reference Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Russia, his remarks were widely seen as criticism of the trip. Addressing the media, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “India, like many other countries, values its ‘strategic autonomy.’ The US ambassador is entitled to his opinion. Obviously, we have different views.”
Jaiswal further added, “Our comprehensive global strategic partnership with the US allows us to agree to disagree on certain issues while respecting each other’s viewpoints.” He declined to provide details about diplomatic conversations but reiterated that India and the US regularly discuss bilateral and global matters.
Garcetti also alluded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, stating, “No war is distant anymore,” and urging countries to take action against those who violate peace. He stressed the importance of trust and collaboration between democratic nations during crises.
Separately, Jaiswal commented on the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump, recalling Modi’s strong condemnation of the attack and his message of solidarity with the American people. Jaiswal concluded by affirming India’s support for democratic values and its commitment to peaceful international relations.
