Iftar party held at UP govt school, headmistress suspended

MEERUT: A headmistress of a govt primary school in UP’s Bulandshahr was suspended on Thursday for “extreme negligence and acting contrary to school rules” after a purported video surfaced in which nearly a hundred people from the local village could be seen sitting in rows and taking refreshments in the classroom during an “iftar party“.
District education department initiated departmental proceedings and suspended Irfana Naqvi, the headmistress, after one of the participants recently posted the clip on social media. The “iftar party” was held earlier this week, officials said.
Basic Siksha Adhikari, Laxmikant Pandey, added, “The concerned headmistress has been extremely negligent and has acted contrary to the school rules. She has been suspended for adopting arbitrariness and violating the UP Govt Servant’s Conduct Rules, 1956, and not informing the higher authorities before granting permission. Taking cognisance of the video, the block education officer was directed to provide a report on the matter.”
The headmistress, when questioned, admitted that the event was held with her permission in the after-school hours.
In a similar case in Meerut on March 13, an FIR was registered against the authorities of a private university after some students were seen in a purported video offering ‘namaz’ on its campus.
Later, six students were held after around 400 Muslim students staged a protest at the university’s main gate. They were agitating against the arrest of a fellow student.
