JAIPUR: The 19-year-old social media influencer released a video on Friday refuting the abduction allegations made by her family three days earlier.
“I have not been abducted. I sat in the car on my own will and married on my own will. I am over 18 years of age, and the case filed by my family is false,” Janvi Modi said in the video, in which she also claimed that her life is under threat.
The district police stated that she has not formally sent any letter or complaint regarding the matter yet. Modi’s family filed an FIR on Tuesday, alleging her abduction. However, she later released a video in which she was seen exchanging garlands with her alleged kidnapper, Tarun Sangla (26), at an Arya Samaj Temple the following day.
A senior police official stated that Modi’s family initially alleged that she was abducted by Sangla, the man with whom, it turned out, she tied the knot. A video of the wedding, which was shared online, eventually reached the district police. “We visited the location from where the family claimed she was abducted. It was only after speaking to her family that we realised the case was related to an inter-caste relationship,” said the official, adding that Modi’s family previously urged Sangla to end the relationship.
“Her (Modi’s) relationship with her family also soured because they disapproved of the relationship. There were frequent quarrels. We also learned that she was living in Bikaner with her maternal family before being forced to return to Shri Dungargarh,” the official said, adding that the couple married in Jodhpur and switched off their mobile phones.
The police said that they do not suspect any abduction angle in the case.
