Gujarat 'encounter' cop is DIG 8 years after retirement

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat govt promoted former SP and “encounter specialist” NK Amin to the rank of DIG on Jan 21, eight years after his retirement and a prolonged legal battle, culminating in a directive from the central administrative tribunal in Nov 2023.
Amin had been suspended and imprisoned for eight years in connection with two controversial cases – killing of 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan and three others in 2004, and Sohrabuddin Sheikh in 2005. He was exonerated in both cases by CBI courts. He was also cleared in departmental inquiries.
Amin had served as an ACP with Gujarat police‘s crime branch when the two shootings happened. Despite the legal setbacks, including his time in prison from 2007 to 2015 alongside senior officer DG Vanzara and others, the court rulings have cleared his name.
