NEW DELHI: Mohammed Shami‘s return to international cricket as an experienced seamer has India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav “excited.”
Since playing in the Ahmedabad final of the ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia, Shami has not been a part of India’s pace attack. After undergoing surgery for an ankle ailment, he missed a year of cricket action.

When Bengal played Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy last year, he made a spectacular comeback to competitive cricket. With his inspiring 7/156 match stats, he helped Bengal win.
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy helped Shami recover his rhythm and convinced the selectors to pick him back for India.
In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shami took five wickets in three games, and the seasoned pacer concluded SMAT 2024 with 11 wickets in nine games at an average of 25.36.
Before the opening match of the T20I series against England, he has been honing his blazing pace in the nets in Bengal, and Suyrakumar is thrilled to see him return.
“It is always good to have an experienced bowler in your side. He is making a comeback after over a year. I am really excited to see him. I have seen his journey and how he was focusing on his bowling and recovery. It is good to see him back,” Suryakumar said in the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
Shami is anticipated to lead the pace attack as Bumrah is sidelined due to an injury he suffered during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Shami will partner with Arshdeep Singh against England.
