The 82nd Golden Globes kicked off in style on Sunday, with French director Jacques Audiard’s surreal narco-musical Emilia Perez emerging as a major early winner. The genre-defying film, which chronicles the transformation of a Mexican drug lord into a woman, entered the night with a record-breaking 10 nominations for a comedy or musical and claimed three trophies early on.
Emilia Perez secured wins for Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana, Best Original Song, Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Non-English Language Film. Saldana’s performance edged out her co-star Selena Gomez.
Demi Moore made a powerful comeback, winning Best Actress in a Comedy for her role in the satirical body horror The Substance. The film explores societal pressures on aging women through a grotesque yet poignant lens. In her acceptance speech, Moore reflected on her journey in Hollywood, sharing how she once believed a producer’s claim that she was “a popcorn actress.”
“That belief corroded me over time,” the 62-year-old actress said. “But then this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box script called The Substance came across my desk, and the universe told me, ‘You’re not done.'”
Sebastian Stan won Best Actor in a Comedy for A Different Man, a film about a man undergoing experimental treatment for a disfiguring facial condition. In his speech, Stan called for greater representation of disability and disfigurement in media, urging audiences to embrace inclusion and understanding.
Kieran Culkin took home Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, a quirky road trip comedy about American cousins retracing their European roots.
Meanwhile, Wicked, Anora, and Challengers remain strong contenders in the Best Comedy or Musical category, with Challengers also claiming Best Original Score.
In the drama categories, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, a post-Holocaust epic about a Hungarian Jewish architect, earned seven nominations and clinched the Best Director award, Best Actor for Adrien Brody and Best Motion Picture – Drama.
Television saw big wins for the Japanese epic series Shōgun, which dominated with awards for Best Television Series (Drama), as well as acting wins for Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, and Anna Sawai.
