AHMEDABAD: A 21-year-old resident of Juhapura registered a complaint of harassment and abuse against her husband and her in-laws after they allegedly compelled her to always wear a nightgown at home.
The woman, who got married in May 2023 in Saudi Arabia, alleged that her husband and in-laws dictated her clothing choices and abused her when she resisted. She later moved to Bapunagar where her in-laws lived.
According to her complaint, her husband, a doctor, developed a drinking habit after their marriage and would become verbally abusive when confronted.
When she reported his behaviour to her in-laws, they allegedly supported him and began ill-treating her.
She stated that her husband would dictate when she could sleep and wake up, and if she resisted, he would get angry and fight with her.
She said she had to massage her husband’s legs before being allowed to sleep. “My husband would insist that I wear a nightgown all the time and whenever I resisted, he and my in-laws would abuse me,” the complaint stated.
She also alleged harassment from her brother-in-law and his wife, saying they would keep finding faults with her and instigate her husband against her.
The situation escalated following a family trip to Kashmir last May, after which the woman returned to her parents’ home. Despite attempts at mediation, her husband allegedly made no reconciliation efforts, prompting her to file the complaint with Vejalpur police.
